As the sign reads, "Mount Mitchell is one of the coldest and windiest places in the south."  While it was close to 90 degrees in the valleys near Asheville this day, the temperature up here remained in the low 70's - perfect for hiking!  Check out the current temperature from here.  Remember - on the summit it will be a couple degrees colder and the wind chill may make it feel much, much colder.
