These rather large Red Spruce trees have succumbed to acid pollution and other factors. Greater than 50% of the larger spruces near the summit left standing are dead.  These are merely a small fragment of the forest that once cloaked the high ridges.  Blackberry bushes take advantage of the openings and crowd around the base of the dead trees.
