The old trail was washed out by a tributary of the Yellowstone Prong during the floods of September 2004. The trail simply disappeared into the creek, and users started their own trail along the edge of the grass, likely to be swallowed up by the next flood. Instead of fixing individual sections like this, though, much of the trail was permanently relocated to higher ground - a much better solution.
