As you approach the falls, you enter a virgin hemlock forest where giant trees remain.  Several have died and fallen in the area around the falls, due to violent storms over the last few years. Now they are threatened with total destruction by the tiny Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, an introduced pest insect.
